The chain in our family is getting weaker. Another link came off today. The news that I heard was that another brother ' KEVIN" had passed away.

You were not in Cambridge very long. You were too sick to take out to dinner or we would have done so. You were a pleasant man with a sweet smile. Albert and I will miss you and miss going in to visit you.

I'm glad I went to see you the day before you passes. You told us (Willie, Linda and me) that you've just taken a pill for pain and you put your cap over your eyes and you said "I'm going to sleep now." I had a feeling you wouldn't be with us much longer.

You suffered too much, now you are at rest. We will meet again someday. Until then, rest in peace.

Remembering my Brother, Kevin


On his 15th birthday, he got a double surprise birthday gift, twin sisters, Mary and Marg.

I remember bob-sledding, skating on Barretts Pond and going to the movies every Saturday afternoon to see the serial. I remember bike riding, 25 cents per hour to rent a bike, going for drives around the island and singing on the top of our lungs.

Kevin made kites and he helped put kites together for everyone. On a windy day everyone in the valley was out flying their kites.

We all hung out at Sammy Gays Restaurant, playing the juke box, dancing and having fun.

Every Christmas Eve, I remember the Old Man, Kevin and Raymond going into the woods and cutting down our Christmas tree, bringing it home and putting it up. That night we would decorate it. 

On Christmas morning, our little brothers and sisters eyes would light up. The look on their faces was priceless.

In the winter time after a big snow storm, Kevin and Raymond would carve out the snow and make an igloo. They would carve windows and doors and put candles in it. Our dad was always afraid it would cave in on them but it was frozen solid so there were no mishaps, thank God. Those were the good old days.

At Christmas, we never had much, but we were happy with what we had; a checkers game and snakes and ladders. It’s a wonderful memory of our younger years.

Kevin loved dogs. He had a dog called Spot in his teen years. He had a harness for him. He would hook the dog to the sled and away he would go.

Later on in life he had a dog named Mick, he was his best friend and his ears at night.

Kevin was the first born of eleven children, six boys and five girls. We had fun growing up. Sometimes there weren't enough seats at the table for us to sit, but we managed.

We may not have had much, but we all had love and we cared for one another. In our family, we did our best to make each other happy.

We shovelled coal, split wood and helped to dry capelin and fish for the winter months.

These were some of the best memories of our lives growing up.

We helped to plant vegetables in the summer and have vegetables for the winter months. We had a cellar and kept all of our vegetables in it. 

These memories are not to be forgotten, they are priceless. There will never be memories like that again.

Kevin was a gifted man. He could take a car apart and put it back together again. He is known for his quick thinking. He was a good swimmer and diver; he taught Sheila how to swim. She was 12 and he was 14.

He loved playing cards and singing. He loved country music; Tom T. Hall was a favourite of his. He loved the song Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine.

He was a friend to everyone and was always there to help anyone in need. He worked in Number 3 Iron Ore Mine for many years, until the mines shut down.

He worked for Pat Short and Herald Gosine as a truck driver until there was no more work to be had. 

Kevin, Angela and I would go to the museum coffee shop and have tea, coffee and donuts in the summer time when I came home. We would sit and sip our coffee and tea and talk about the mines. Kevin knew a lot about the mines because he worked in them.

When I went home to visit my family, we always had great times. I looked forward to it every year and now I only have memories. These are only a few of the memories I have of Kevin. I will treasure them forever.

It was always Kevin and Raymond, and Albert and Jer. Now half of each pair is gone. You can't say Raymond without thinking of Kevin, and you can't say Albert without thinking of Jer. I will miss them both. 

Kevin always put his family first, and would do anything for them, at least what he could do. He loved life. Each time you look at or talk to his children they would have his smile and a twinkle in their eyes. 

At Kevin’s house, the kettle was always on and you had to have a cup of tea.

Kevin loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grand children. He did his best to make his family happy. He loved having a good family party, having a cold beer and just having fun.

Kevin suffered from emphysema and was a survivor of lung cancer.

After a ten month visit to Cambridge, Ontario Kevin passed away on August 4th, 2011 in Cambridge Memorial Hospital. 

Born on Bell Island, Newfoundland on May 12th in 1932, he was the eldest son of the late Albert and Annie (Reynolds) Lewis. 

He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary and Annie, two brother, Jer and Patrick (Patrick in infancy). He is survived by his children, Linda, Kevin, Brian, Cindy and Terry and their spouses, grand children and great-grand children, brothers and sisters Raymond, Alice, Albert, Willy, Marg, Angela and Joe and their spouses, many family and friends, nieces, nephews and cousins, and his companion of 27 years, Sheila Cox and his fishing buddies Bill and Marion Whalen.

Kevin will always be remembered for his smile and his kind heart.

A memorial service was held in Cambridge, Ontario, followed by a reception at the Newfoundland Club.

His remains were flown to Newfoundland for burial in the family plot on Bell Island. Home "Sweet" Home

Funeral service was held August 9, 2011 at St. Michaels RC Church.

Kevin will be dearly missed by his family and friends, especially his companion, Sheila.

On behalf of my brothers and sisters, I would like to thank all who helped in any way; donation, food, visits, phone calls, cards, and all who came to celebrate Kevin’s life. Special thanks to Sheila for helping Kevin when he was struggling with lung cancer.

Thank you all, each and every one. Kevin is at peace now.

My Dear Love Kevin

I surely miss you and your funny jokes that you always told.
The day God called you home, my heart went with you too.
I will always be with you.
I gave you my angel pin as a symbol of my love until we meet again.
I don't know how I will get by without you.
I miss everything about you, but at least I have all of the memories which I will hold close to my heart.
I will always think of you as being next to my heart and every step I take I'm sure you will be following in my footsteps.
Kevin my love, I remember you asking me, if you went before me, for me to put your cap down over your eyes before they close the lid - I will do that for you my love, but it will be hard to do for I will wish you were still here with me.

A Tribute to Kevin

A Dad, a brother, a companion and everyone's friend.

He left this world and went to Heaven on that other shore where, in time, we will all meet again.

We know that God has a special place for you Kevin because here on Earth you certainly did your best.  

We look back on all the good you did and tried to do for so many people.  From those who were lonely, in trouble and in need, to those who were without loving care.  

We will always remember your kindness.  It was your spirit of generosity that everyone felt when they were in your home.  You always had a positive word or gesture to make them feel special.

We shall never forget your smile and the way you gave us so many things; sometimes more than our share.

Your warm handshake for friends and the way so many people like to gather at your home on the Island.  Whenever the family came home every summer, we all went to your kitchen to sit around and tell stories about the days gone by and yes those were the days!

Now you're in Heaven and no longer do we have you to visit, but you will always be in our memories; so rest a peaceful rest Kevin.

We will miss you.

At the Break of Dawn

I fished the waters of Bell Island at the break of dawn.
I caught many a big ones by being there at the break of dawn.
My good friends and I always had fun on the high waters at the break of dawn.
I always loved fishing since I was a young lad.
Especially when I was out fishing with my Dad.
I always loved capelin; they were easy to catch.
Go out in the water and catch them in my net.
And these are the "good old days" - I didn't forget.

You Are My Brother, A Friend Of My Heart.

To have you for a brother 
was something in which I took pride.
No one can equal you; 
no matter who tried.

You gave me all you had to give;
Whether big or small.
But most of all, you gave me love;
The greatest gift of all.

I didn't need Christmas or any special occasion to let you know that I am grateful that you are my brother and my very best friend.

As we grew older and went our separate ways, the memories of our childhood will forever stay.  

I couldn't visit you every day, so I called you on the phone.  
It was a sad day when God called you home.

Now you're in Heaven dear brother;
alongside our Father and Mother.
Others were also waiting there for you;
two brothers and 2 sisters too.

We were a big family of eleven children;
Our parents made life complete.
At our dinner table, there wasn't an empty seat.

The house on the hill will be there still.
