Obituary of 黄張美玉 Mi-Yu Huang
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mrs. Mi-Yu Chang Huang (黄張美玉), on Saturday, January 27, 2024. Our mom was born on August 10, 1933 in Tainan, Taiwan. She was the eldest daughter in a very large family. Mom spent much of her youth at the paint factory that her family owned and operated. She grew up in the loving care of her gupo, Chang Xi Man (張細 滿). Our mom married Henry Chung-Chi Huang (黄崇冀) in 1956, quickly growing their family with the addition of three sons, Peter, Ian, and John. While dad pursued higher education in New York, mom stayed in Taiwan raising her sons with love and devotion. When dad found his first teaching job in Fort Vermilion, Alberta, he sent for his wife and children. Against the advice of her family, mom courageously made the long journey to northern Canada with three small children in tow. The Huang family would eventually settle in Calgary; dad taught high school math, while mom looked after us three growing boys. Our parents were strong advocates for the value of education and pushed their children to pursue degrees. We would all become surgeons and dad would eventually earn a PhD of his own; behind all of the qualifications was our mother, unfailingly providing support, love, and care. Our mother took incredible pride in our professions, and felt that the achievements of her children was her greatest joy. One of mom’s greatest accomplishments, in addition to her children and six grandchildren, was when she passed the Canada Postal exam. This allowed her to secure employment at the post office and make an income of her own. One of our fondest memories is picking up mom from work on Fridays, heading to Chinatown for dinner, and mom proudly paying for the meal. Finances were often difficult for the Huang family but mom always found a way to look after everyone. When their three children entered medical school, mom and dad moved back to Taiwan to allow dad to fulfill his dream of being a professor at two universities in Taiwan. They traveled extensively throughout Asia during this time. Despite their adventures, mom was very happy to return to her children in Calgary when our dad retired. She was thrilled with the birth of each of her six grandchildren! In the final years of mom’s life, we were blessed with the exceptional care and companionship of her many care providers, particularly Jasmine Han. We will miss our mom and grandmother greatly, but find peace in knowing that her values of courage, tenacity, and resilience live on in her family; Dr. Peter (Amber), Dr. Ian (Dana), Dr. John and her grandchildren Dr. Paul (Avneet), Stephen (Brooke), Katie, Jade, Dr. Jordan, and Joshua. Mom is predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Henry. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a viewing held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. If you are unable to attend in person, please use the following link to view the service online: https://view.oneroomstreaming.com/index.php?data=MTcwNjUyNDQzMTEyOTAwODQmb25lcm9vbS1lbWFpbCZpbnZpdGF0aW9uX2NvcHlfbGluaw== If friends and family so desire, donations can be made to a charity of their choosing.
