It is with great sadness that I heard of Bill passing away from us.  He crossed my life in 1978 working in the High Arctic. I am glad I met him recently at a SNAME meeting in March. 
Bill's  well packed equipment boxes were like Christmas parcels to me and a sign of help from the deep south! 
As part of the "ol'boys"-team  we will keep Bill in our memories and cherish his humor and life , his comradely work and help in the arctic.
To Andrea and her family my heartfelt condolences.

Uncle Bill was an amazing man. Always up for an adventure, he taught me so much about the outdoors and how to power through adversity. Many of the lessons I learned from you I am passing on to my children. You will always be a part of us.

As a brother-in-law and friend he was awesome. Family  and friends were so important to him.
He was their for our parents as if he was a son.
He was involved with Brian in cross country skiing.
If Brian needed a coach for lawn bowling when his regular coach was gone he took up the Bowl.
He will be so missed.

Our sincere condolences to the Graham family although I only had the pleasure of knowing Bill. 
I met Bill in 1963 as a Boy Scout at the Canadian Jamboree and enjoyed his friendship in the scouting activities. 
As part of life’s coincidences the next time meeting and this time working with Bill was when I started working with Dr Dan Masterson on building the Arctic ice islands. Bill always impressed me when he would readily jump in and enthusiastically solve any problem that came along big or small.

Our sincere sympathy Andrea and family on your tragic loss. Although our times with Bill mostly revolved around Friday night curling at Huntington and the occasional social gathering, we always enjoyed his company and found him to be such a calm, upbeat, humorous, positive man, always a pleasure to be around.
Cal remembers sharing and comparing stories of work life in the Arctic and of course we always remember the old blue camper van which was a trademark for so many years.
No doubt he will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.


I first met Bill when we were working off the Labrador Coast in 1976, and many times thereafter in different parts of the Canadian Arctic and in various office settings in Calgary.  He was a great Arctic colleague to have who was honest, strong, experienced and energetic, and always friendly and smiling despite the  setting and situation. Although I do not know Bill's family members, I do know from past conversations of his pride for them all. 

We will not forget you Bill, for the good times we had while knowing and working  with you, and for the contributions you made to ice engineering and northern exploration in Canada. 



I was saddened to hear of Bill's passing.  Bill was a gentle inspiration to all who knew him.  I got to meet him through my brother Dan - Bill and Dan worked together for most of their careers.  Bill was a good friend to my brother and a really loyal and supportive fellow employee.  Theirs was work in the Arctic which could be harsh and difficult - but so rewarding and unique.  Then they got to spend time in the Calgary Engineering office where life was more normal. I always enjoyed the chance to be with Bill, though it took a flight to Calgary to join Dan and Bill and the other colleagues for coffee, or SNAME or beer.  The last time was a SNAME meeting in March this year in Calgary when we all congregated to hear Dan give a presentation on all of their life's work - I am so glad I was able to attend and spend time with the group.  Bill gave a truly great contribution to Arctic exploration and ice research.

So sorry hear of Bills passing.

As an immigrant to Canada, I considered Bill to be an authentic Western Canadian with deep roots and a strong work ethic.  The kind of person to get things done, prepared to stick his neck out if necessary and do the right thing.  I know his family was very important to him and he was there to help others.  His family can take pride in a life well lived.

I knew him through Ski for Light as a kind and thoughtful man, and always with a great sense of humour. He was always great to be around! 
I will miss him, and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Bill and I worked closely together for about 40 years for engineering consulting companies, based out of Toronto and Montreal initially, executing field tests aimed at obtaining basic ice strength to be used in the design of offshore structures and islands used for oil and gas exploration and production safely with minimal environmental impact.  Bill played a key role in the field testing of ice strength and stiffness and in the development and use of the equipment required to accomplish this daunting task. Scientists and engineers readily worked alongside Bill to develop required equipment and techniques to execute this daunting work. He will be missed by the community for his warm and friendly manner and his focus on the work with strong ethics and an ability to get results even when faced with the most adverse of conditions, which the Arctic offshore frequently presented.

Bill and I first met when we attended NAIT together in Edmonton (1966-1968). We were on the same Alberta Bursary program which paid $100 per month when we were at school and $300 per month plus living exspenives during the summer. Needless to say we were broke most of the time.  However, we played cards and pooled our spending money to drink a few beers at the K Wing.  He and I were a year older than most of our classmates, but that didn't stop the bouncers from throwing us out.  Bill managed to get back in by going through the ladies and escorts section and when the bouncer tried to catch him and throw him out again, Bill evaded them by walking along the short dividing wall between the sections. The fact that he was pouring beer on the heads of his classmates while trying to escape really got the place in an uproar.  He was laughing all the way out the door and they couldn't catch him.  Go Bill Go, we cheered.  May you rest in Peace my friend.  Elliot

I loved how you would wake me for breakfast when you came to visit or when I was staying at your house.  You would call me by a nickname only you used: “Jessica Jane.” As a teen I would roll my eyes in complaint but would be smiling on the inside. I will miss how special and valued you always made me feel. I will not miss the long hikes that you tricked me into going on by saying they were short. Lol. ❤️ You Always, Uncle.
