So Lan Choi

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved grandmother, Choi Solan at the age of 95. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, October 23, 2023, in her home in Calgary, Alberta.

Born on October 16, 1928 in ChaoYang, China, she later moved to Yuen Long, Hong Kong with her husband to raise her family. Together, they ran a small vegetable seed company. In 1981, Solan immigrated to Calgary, Alberta where she resided for 42 years.

Family was of utmost importance to Choi Solan. She spent a long and fulfilling life as a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the heart of countless memories in our family and they serve as a testament to her enduring legacy. Her warm embrace and life stories will be deeply missed by her family.

She had an insatiable love for old Cantonese black and white films and music from the 70s. She could often be found playing the films around the house. Her passion for gardening was a source of great joy. Her gardens and vibrant orchids were a testament to her green thumb. As a grandmother of many talents, she was also very crafty and made a lot of sewing projects. Her culinary skills were also admired by all and she religiously taped cooking shows. She was a cook and a VCR Whiz! Grandma’s turnip cakes and new years gok zai were the best! Some say her steamed fish was ‘fire’.

Her mark on our lives was boundless, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all of us.

Choi Solan is predeceased by her husband, Choi Hei Cheung and her sons, Choi Manshing, Joseph Choi and Vincent Choi. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Choi Mantak, James Choi, Stephen Choi and her daughters, Dorothy Soo and Rosaline Choi, as well as numerous children , grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Grandmother Choi will continue to shine brightly in our hearts. Her memory will forever be cherished. We will miss her very much.

Relatives are invited to a visitation and incense burning at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, November 3, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.

Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery (Chinese section).
