Sam was born to Samuel Edward and Clementi Annie on May 12, 1943 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He belonged to the Anglican Young People’s Association and the Boy Scouts of Canada as a boy. The Boy Scouts played a large role in Sam’s life and included achieving the coveted Queen Scout Award at age 16. He went to high school at Queen Elizabeth High School, graduating in 1961. He played on the football team in high school and helped win the city championship in 1961. At 18, he joined the 1st Armdale Rover Scouts Crew. Rover Scouts explored a variety of elevated adventures pertaining to the environment and outdoor aspects and likely played a role in his future career and interests.
After high school, he then went to Dalhousie University to study Engineering and played on their football team as well. As a young adult, he enjoyed spending time with his sister Anne and niece Kathleen. They often enjoyed camping and playing cards.
Sam moved to Calgary, Alberta for work. He was set up on a blind date with a girl named Margaret Rowan by mutual friends. They married on December 31, 1977 and moved to Okotoks, Alberta in 1978. They welcomed Christine and Heather in 1980 and 1982. Sam was very involved in his daughters lives over the years – from school trips, to T-ball, soccer, and camping trips to bringing their dog to the arena to watch them figure skate, and guiding them into adulthood.
Sam worked as a Geophysicist for most of his professional career working for some larger companies, such as Dome Petroleum, to having his own consulting company, Samar Resources. He and Marg were avid curlers for many years and Sam was president of the Okotoks Curling Club at one point. He was also involved in the Rotary Club in Okotoks for many years, including being the President in the 1997-1998 year. Later in life, Sam and Marg enjoyed annual summer road trips to places such as Jasper and Waterton National Parks, the Oregon Coast, much of BC, and Saskatchewan. He also always enjoyed puttering around the house and in his yard and garden. Once there were grandkids, Sam enjoyed spending time with his grandkids as much as possible.
Sam is survived by his wife Marg and daughters Christine (Dan) and Heather (Rich), grandchildren Claire, Riley, Emerson and Morgan and granddog Ruby.
Aside from Sam’s love of his family, he always enjoyed socializing, debating and was very competitive – especially when it came to board games or cards.
