It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, grand uncle, and great-grand uncle, Rudolf Banert on Friday, January 1, 2021 at the age of 88.
Rudy was predeceased by his wife, Pauline, two sisters, Sophie and Ottie and brother Leo. He is survived by his daughter Gail (Chris), son Douglas (Nyomi), grandchildren Sarah (Evan), Lauren, Natalie (Matt), Jason, Jessica and great granddaughter Piper, brother-in-law Karl Then, nephews Peter, Klaus, Walter, Paul, Bernie, Ronald, Harold and niece Helga (Helmut).
Rudy immigrated to Canada from Germany as a young man, first residing in Patricia, Alberta before moving to Calgary. He worked at the University of Calgary as an Engineering Technologist for many years and later at the Petroleum Recovery Institute before retiring. He was also a long time member of the German Canadian Club Men’s Choir.
Rudy was an avid outdoorsman who loved the mountains, skiing, hiking, biking and camping. There were many family camping trips in Western Canada, as well as across the U.S. Some of his happiest times were sitting around the campfire playing his harmonica or guitar after enjoying a good steak and a glass of his homemade wine, with his family and friends. As a young man, he enjoyed teaching figure skating and judo classes. He also loved to play his accordion for every family event. Rudy loved to travel; he and Pauline made several trips to Europe and Hawaii. Later he continued his many travels to Europe, Asia, Mexico, Tahiti and Alaska. Truly he was the Happy Wanderer.
Rudy enjoyed life to the fullest and was very social, having many close friends and acquaintances. He dearly loved his family and spent many happy hours with his grandchildren. His kindness and zest for life will be deeply missed.
A private family Memorial Service will be held with Reverend Tom Melvin officiating.
