It’s been a year, a year of missing you when I visit anything war related - you’d be so excited to tell me all about it.  What to look for, stories about it.  Then you’d be so pleased when I sent you pictures of my day’s adventures. You had such knowledge of history it was amazing.  Rob- you are missed by many.  Gone too soon my friend, gone too soon! 


Robert was always a pleasant and happy kid. He never outgrew that. I think we've all lost someone special. I think the bigger world has too - a kind and most gentle giant.

I will miss our unexpected encounters over McDonald's coffee. I will always be thinking of you Rob when I'm at your McDees on 16th Ave.

Robert and I met at Colonel Macleod Jr High school in Calgary.   My biggest memory was our great performance in a play “That’s Entertainment!” We had such fun singing and dancing.   Robert, I already miss your texts and your consistent effort in connecting with not only me but all your friends will never be forgotten.    You left this world a better place.  Until we meet again… you are fondly remembered.

No matter the occasion Rob would send a meme or a photo or just a quick hello to stay in touch.  If you knew Rob he knew you. You could ask about anyone and he knew how they were, where they were and how they were really doing, because he was genuinely interested and cared about those in his life.  He was the glue for so many.  I was fortunate enough to spend his last day with him.  We had a beautiful afternoon sitting by a pond  eating popcorn and ice cream.  We shared fun memories and laughed. I'm so grateful I had that time with him.  I will miss you Rob, thank you for being you 💖

I remember Rob from such a young age. Between Nancy, Mitch and me we tried hard to get him into sports. I coached him in Flag football at Winston Heights and even got to get him to try hockey where he was sure to get a roughing or boarding penalty because he could not stop. I think he had fun.
After high school I got Rob to be an assistant coach with the Bantam Golden Hawks. The poor guy had the job of being the heavy because I got tired of screaming at players. 
Later in life Rob and me got to officiate a high school football game together. Everything came full circle
He loved his sports and was a real perfectionist.
He will be missed by many

I send my deepest sympathy and condolences to all of you in the Eng family.   As a teacher at Crescent Heights High School and a Crescent alumna myself, I have known Rob for so many years and to lose him at such a young age makes my heart very sad.  I do hope that you all may find comfort in your wonderful memories of times together.

Rob was a great guy to work with at the city parks dept. We both shared many a stories about football and his days as a ref.  Always greeting me with a hello newman . A personal nickname  and his contagious smile .  Outside of work he touched alot of people . Gonna be  well missed.   Take care of the rules in heaven robert .  

Robert asked me to take photos at a high school game over 10 years ago.   You can tell how much he loved coaching to the younger generation.

I am so sorry for the loss of an unbelievably wonderful person. Robert was the nicest person I’ve ever known. My condolences and thoughts are with his family. Robert will never be forgotten. 

We are very sorry about Rob’s passing. We met Rob when he and I officiated football and we worked the first of many games together on a Saturday at old Mewata Stadium in 1994.
He will be missed.

Condolences to Rob’s family as losing a little brother must be a terrible shock and know our community is grieving with you. I was fortunate to have spent a lot of time with Rob over the last decade going to football, concerts, community events, and just many outings in general enjoying his friendship of pure selflessness. Would have to say it was his appreciation of nature, flowers and animals that stood out for me as we walked our dogs together for years knowing what a blessing they are in our lives. The love Rob expressed about his mom and sisters was heartwarming and we visited his parents grave on many occasions bringing flowers as he continued to thank them for all they did for him. The gratitude and generosity they instilled in his upbringing is evident in all us friends that mourn his passing; he was devoted in a perpetual spirit of kindness to everyone.

I remember him coming up to me at my baseball game an said your fast an big you'd make a great tight end on my football team, i never even thought of football later that year i was the starting TE on the Crescent Heights Cowboys football team an ending up playing football till i was 29, thanks coach for introducing me to football an giving me a new sport which i love. You'll be missed my brother.

Your family was blessed to have a young man such as Robert. The boys were young when we knew him but they were great buds and we loved Robert. Such a polite and happy person. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the whole family. God bless you all and," Rest in peace Robert".

Robert was quite a guy. Todd and Robert used to play together when we were in Calgary. They spent some time digging worms in Grandpa Busters lawn hoping to go fishing.  Such a great kid! Loved by all of us. So sorry for your families loss. Rest in Peace dear Robert. Way to young but God needed your help. Love you still.  Todd's momma marjie!!!

I was incredibly blessed to have officiated football in Calgary for more than a decade. A kind hearted soul, with whom we kept in touch even after leaving Calgary nearly 20 years ago. We even chatted about Calgary vs Edmonton from Wyoming the Friday before he passed. Per Ardua, Ad Astra my friend.

Heartfelt condolences to the entire family. So very sorry for your loss. I got to know Rob through our passion for football - in particular in the amateur football officiating world. His passion and energy for the game will be missed by many.

I met Rob through one of his many school friends about 12 years ago and instantly knew I had a friend for life.  Rob always kept in touch through social media when I moved abroad and was worried for me while I lived in Hong Kong.   He would give me info on history and things to see and enriched my life greatly.  I used his suggestions on Remembrance day last year and visited the Canadian War Memorial in HK.   I’m so glad I did and without his suggestions I wouldn’t have made a day of it.  Not only was Rob an expert at football, but he knew the history of WWII and its hero’s as well.  He made history come alive for me as I walked among the gravestones of notable Canadians lost in the fight in HK.  I told him he should start doing tours and he just laughed. 
Whenever I came back to Calgary, he was always ready with an invite to meet up for a drink.  I regret not being able to connect the last time due to the pandemic.   I’m sorry I won’t be able to come back for the service to celebrate his life.  He was such a kind soul, and will be missed.

I was shocked at the sudden passing of my childhood - basically all my life - friend ... RIP Robert G S Eng ... my deepest condolences to the Eng family, and the thousands across Calgary who knew Rob - he was a pillar of so many communities. Some of my fondest memories were piling over to his place in grades 6-9 to watch movies, as he was a rare one to have VCR machine - FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH stands out the most. We all watched it numerous times. Our connection was deepened when I returned from 15 years in China, as he was happy that someone had a knowledge of his home/Chinese culture, he would reach out to me once in awhile with some reference to Chinese food, language, culture. Funny in a weird way, we all called him Sumo (elementary school I think is when it started), and he wasn't even Japanese. He was always one to text me on my birthday, and probably thousands of others each year. That was Rob, he looked out for everyone. A huge loss to so many who knew him, and Rob was not short of knowing a lot of people from ALL walks off life. RIP my dear dear friend, Sumo. 🥰 ❤️KP. (Karen Patterson)

Rob was such a good friend!  He remembered everything about my family and I loved the messages for every holiday, Bday and anniversary!  He was a special soul and I was lucky to have known him! It is so hard to believe we have lost you.  Rob, was an amazing friend to so many and was the glue for keeping high school friends in touch.  He was a truly kind hearted,  genuine and thoughtful individual that will be greatly missed by all.   My heart goes out to his family and friends that are grieving the loss of this beautiful person.  We were all blessed to know him. 

I remember Rob from his junior high years at Colonel Macleod Junior High. He was one of those students who glowed at the heart of a school- involved, caring, proud of his school, and a true friend to many. Rob was quiet and unassuming, but that was part of what drew people to him.  He was one of those students one just does not forget! He had the " best " sense of humor. I often witnessed his hidden grin when another student made a "faux pas" or had to come and get my "bible".  I don't believe I ever had to reprimand Rob.  His self-discipline and respectful nature, along with his wit and intelligence, made him a true friend to all. It was not in his nature to leave friends behind. He embraced them all-- an ever-widening group of people who loved him, trusted him, confided in him, and knew, without question, that he was there for them if needed.  His legacy is one of a life well-spent ( though MUCH too short)- lived with integrity, passion for his interests and people he loved, appreciation, gratitude, and zest to connect with people and build relationships. My heart is so heavy, trying to navigate through this life knowing you are not here is not an easy thing.  Rob was my rock when my dad passed and was ALWAYS here with his amazing smile for many many years.  
The world has lost one of the most genuine true humans I have ever had blessed in my life, and heaven has gained a beautiful angel.

I remember Rob’s kindness when we first met at U of C.  Later after graduation we reconnected and caught up from time to time.  When my Dad passed he reached out.  He was there with strength and support.  He would always wish me a happy birthday and vice versa.  He kept in touch despite me moving to Ireland.  I will always remember his warmth and generosity of time.  He will be missed but always remembered.  


I feel so deeply saddened by the passing of the kind and gentle soul that Rob was. Food, friendship and football,  he was a welcome guest in our house many times. I admired his spirit and joy at giving back to his community through coaching. He thoroughly enjoyed when young athletes went on to greater successes and moreso when they became good people. I am determined to live in a way that is true to his spirit of giving. Our sincerest condolences to his family and many, many friends, Ian, Dolores and Salvador Mattinson.
