Betty Solar, 99, passed away peacefully on Monday 14th November. Betty was born in North Battleford, SK to Mary Chomey and Michael Sklarchuk, the 3rd of 13 children. She served in the Reserves during the Second World War as a Second Lieutenant. She trained in Ponoka, AB and was a registered nurse in Texas, USA; Inuvik, NT; Churchill, MB; and Vilna, Chauvin and Fairview in AB.
She was often picked for promotion to management but never wanted to leave the hospital floor. At 65, after retiring, she became the manager of a residential care home in Edmonton, AB where she cared for and entertained residents not much older than she was.
She married Anton Mason Solar in April,1950 and they settled in Texas for a few years because women were still being encouraged to work after the war and she wanted to continue her nursing. Anton died in 1975. Their first 2 children, Karyn and Thomas, were born in Texas. Kimbal and Hazel were born in AB, Kenneth in MB and Patricia in NT.
Betty met Armand Daigle at a Legion Dance in 1984. She spent 20 happy years doing what she always dreamed of, dancing 3 nights a week at various Legion Halls. Armand died in 2012.
Betty was predeceased by her son Kenneth and her siblings Ernie, Ann, Marge, Edward, Helen, Jean, Mary, Tony, Ted and Hank. She is survived by her sisters Elsie and Dodie, her brother Jack, her sister-in-law Grete and 33 grandchildren/nieces and nephews.
The service will be held at 11am Saturday, 3rd December 2022 at
South Calgary Funeral Center
