On the morning of November 24, 2022, our beloved Mike passed away peacefully at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, following a hard fought battle with sudden liver failure. At the time of his passing he was surrounded by family who ensured he knew how loved he was.
For many who knew him, the news has come as quite a shock but discretion was always part of Mike’s nature and we wanted to honor that during the past few months. This is why it's all the more important for everyone to come together and celebrate the life of a beloved husband, son, brother and friend.
You can say a lot of things about “Tight Mike”, but no one can deny he was a one-of-a-kind guy. Although he never wanted the spotlight and would actively go out of his way to avoid attention, he had an incredibly unique sense of humor. If you caught him in the right mood you were always treated to some hearty laughs. He had an endearing way of saying what was on his mind (usually followed by a quick ‘sorry’ at the end for good measure). His comedic delivery and presence will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Mike was a pure spirit and a genuinely kind person, so much so that he humbly awarded himself the title of a ‘people pleaser’ over the years. He would never hesitate to bend over backwards for family and friends and almost always put others' needs before his own. He always placed high importance and focus on how he conducted himself in daily life and had a strong set of guiding principles. Even though Mike was known to be a tad uptight at times (hence his nickname), any tension was born out of a deep sense of caring and concern for those closest to him. He had a huge heart and always wanted the best for everyone.
On behalf of the whole family, we thank the amazing ICU team at the University of Alberta Hospital for the exceptional care, love and support they provided Mike and our family. It truly made a difference during this extremely difficult time
We would like to invite you to join us at The South Calgary Funeral Centre at 1 p.m. on December 16, 2022, to honor and celebrate Mike’s life. We will be doing a short service (Mike always appreciated brevity), followed by coffee and lunch. There will be an optional wake at Fergus & Bix in McKenzie Towne, Mike’s favorite local pub. There will be a livestream link shared with those who were invited but are unable to join us in person.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, our family kindly requests any donations in Mike’s memory can be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation, at https://www.liver.ca/.
We also request that anyone who is able donate the lifesaving gift of blood to try doing so. It’s something that takes a bit of time but costs nothing and is priceless to those in need, especially in the holiday season.
