Born in Balderson, Ontario, on January 24, 1932, Mary spent her formative years living in Lanark County. Her family eventually settled in a log cabin on the French Line that was originally built by her great-grandfather. Mary held a number of jobs prior to entering a convent to become a nun, but she left religious life to pursue other passions. She later met her husband Robert and they married at St. Declan’s church on October 8, 1955. The couple settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, raising four children prior to moving to Calgary in the 1960s. Mary continued to raise her five children as a devoted homemaker, in addition to working as a waitress, selling Avon products and eventually retiring from a position with Mini Maids in the 1990s. She was an avid and very successful bingo player, as well as knitter of homemade sweaters and blankets for numerous family members and others. Mary was passionate about reading and literacy, and had a wealth of background knowledge and opinions about current news events and “popinjay” politicians!
The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to all of those involved in Mary’s care over her final 24 days, including Dr. Amin, Dr. Ly, Dr. Hunter and the nursing angels on Unit 46 at the Foothills Hospital. We are especially grateful to the hospice team at AgeCare Skypointe for their kindness and compassion with Mom’s care, and for also taking the time to provide comfort to the family.
A Celebration of Life for Mary Dick will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mary’s name can be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
