Marie Elizabeth (Betty) Shifflett died on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the High River Hospital in High River, AB.
She was the loving wife of Delmore Shifflett and has missed him dearly since his passing in 2006. Surviving Betty are her four beloved children - one daughter Caroline Marie and three sons, James Robert (Gayle) of Calgary, David Henry (Judy) of Spruce Grove, and Charles Raymond (Fay) of High River. Betty is also survived by her three grandchildren, Franklin Wesley and Elizabeth Fay “Ellie” Shifflett of High River, and Phillip Jeffrey David Shifflett of Spruce Grove. Betty was born on March 17, 1922 in Singapore Malaysia and was brought to Canada in 1925 by her Danish parents Jens and Marie Vanghoj. They lived on their farm near Hussar, AB where Betty was educated in a country school, later taking high school in Standard, AB. She went on to Prairie Bible Institute at Three Hills, graduating in 1943, after which she took nurses training at the Calgary General Hospital graduating in 1946. Betty and Del lived in Calgary for some thirty years where they raised their family, during which time she was predeceased by both her parents and one young son Franklin William. In 1980 Betty and Del retired to Bassano, AB where they enjoyed a quiet life with some involvement in FCSS Board work and the local Library Board. Betty also served three years on Bassano’s town Council. When health problems arose, a move to High River seemed wise in order to be somewhat closer to all three sons and their families.
At Betty’s request there will be no formal service – just happy memories of the good years shared by family, and many treasured friends and classmates. Memorial donations may be made to the Calgary Humane Society, 4455 - 110 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7 or a charity of choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
