Lorne was born in Regina, Sask, the eldest of three boys of Lloyd and Ethel Brooks. Dad worked at the family hardware store in Liberty, Sask through grade 12. He studied Pre-Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan and then moved to enroll in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Dad graduated in 1945 Cum Laude with a D.D.S. at the young age of 21. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. and was honourably discharged with the rank of Captain in October 1946.
Fate would intercede the summer of 1944 while working a summer job as a bell hop at the Banff Springs Hotel where he met the love of his life Georgina (Geordie) Sharpe who was working a summer job as a chamber maid while attending the University of Manitoba. Mom and Dad were married in Westminster Church, Winnipeg on Sept. 11, 1945. They moved to Calgary shortly thereafter. Dad immersed himself in his dental practice while Mom kept busy raising their four children. Dad was highly regarded by his patients, colleagues and peers. He held executive positions locally, provincially, federally and internationally in the dental profession. His honours, awards and achievements were numerous including, but not limited to: president, Calgary & District Dental Society 1952-53; president, Alberta Dental Association, 1958; chairman, University Liaison Committee of the Alberta Dental Association, 1968-1982; Fellow of International College of Dentists (F.I.C.D.), 1964; Calgary Stampeder Football Club dentist, 1946-1985; Associate Director, Calgary Stampeder Football Club,1972-1985; director, Richfield Group of Companies; and U. of T. Alumnus of Distinction, 1991.
Summers were spent at their cottage at Lake Windermere, B.C. where the entire family became avid water-skiers. Mom and Dad moved from their home in Mount Royal to Springbank in 1970 and, along with their now-grown children, planted more than 22,000 trees and shrubs on their 40 acres. While not blissfully tending their acreage, Mom and Dad travelled extensively. Dad often joked that his planning could have been a bit better, for at one point in time, all four children were at university at once causing a drain on "The Bank of Dad".
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Geordie Sept 8, 2006 as well as his brothers Barry and Doug.
Dad will be dearly missed by his children: Lynne, Cathy, Diane McCarten (Dan) and Bill; grandchildren Scott McCarten; Catherine Thompson (Ian); Lindsay Hunt (Nick); Georgia Hunt (Chris); and his great-grandchildren Zach and Abby Thompson.
The family would like to thank long-time friend Dr. Doug Thorson for his many years of care and the wonderful staff at The Manor of Signature Park-Justin, Violet, Suzie and Linda, to name but a few.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to the charity of one's choice in Lorne's memory.
