Loreen de Baleau passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the age of 94 years. Born in March of 1928 to Walter and Clara Baylor (nee Klemish), Loreen spent most of her formative years on the family farm in southeast Saskatchewan. One of ten children, Loreen led an eventful life tending gardens, harvesting crops, raising farm animals and attending a single room school house. With such a large family to feed, Loreen became an expert baker. Her famous butter tarts and pecan pies were a favourite of all who knew her. Loreen moved to Calgary in the early ‘50s. She worked downtown at the Hudson’s Bay Company and met the love of her life, Alan de Baleau. They married in 1955 and remained in Calgary and raised two children. Loreen was always active. She enjoyed skiing, skating, curling and walking every day. She loved traveling, gardening, flowers, music, movies, fashion and visiting the family farm and its wheat fields. Always a compassionate listener, Loreen was beloved by her many friends and family.
She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her daughters and their families, Claire de Baleau, Paula de Baleau and George Given; her sister Marjorie Szabo, of Las Vegas; her brother, Walter Baylor, of Regina; and her brother-in-law, George Zvanchuk, of Calgary; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Clara Baylor; brothers Melvin Baylor and Eugene Baylor; sisters Evangeline Branch, Gladys Martin (Leo), Dorothy Baylor, Norma Bertram (Bob), and Bernice Zvanchuk.
Loreen was predeceased by her husband Alan, in 1981. They will be reunited at a private family graveside service at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery).
