Liam is lovingly remembered by his children Chantal (Darren), Karyn, Rohan (Caitlin), Kyle, and their mother Mary as well as grandsons Connor and Wyn. As well as his brothers Brendan, John, and Gerard. Liam is predeceased by his parents Bridie and Bill, and brothers Peter and Noel.
Liam was born in Roscrea, County Tipperary, Ireland, on March 31, 1956 to Bridie and Bill Somers as the first of 6 boys. He graduated from the University of Galway in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering before beginning work as a civil engineer for the county of Limerick. Liam met Mary in Limerick in 1979, welcoming their first child in 1980. The three would embark on a grand adventure to Canada in 1982, settling in Edmonton where they would welcome three more children, before moving to Calgary in 1994.
Liam spent many years exploring and enjoying the outdoors, driving and camping all over western Canada and the northwestern United States with his family. He enjoyed skiing with his children throughout the mountains of the Canadian Rockies and loved to hike in Kananaskis and wherever else his travels would take him.
Liam worked as a Systems Analyst in a variety of sectors throughout his career including energy, education and engineering. Many benefited from his kind mentorship and Liam was well known for his professional talents, but it was his outstanding personality that created long lasting memories for those he impacted. Words like nice, kind, calm, inspiring, motivating, compassionate, and genuine are used by colleagues to describe him.
He became an avid runner later in life, running his first marathon at the age of 56 and continuing to run marathons across the world including Boston, Vancouver, Long Beach and Valencia, Spain to name only a few. He built a community of close friends through running and it was one of the great joys of his life.
A loving father, grandfather, brother and loyal friend to many, he will be greatly missed.
