John Leslie Giles was born in Reading, England where he lived and worked until the family emigrated to the Camrose, AB area in 1925. He married Dorothy Fraser on May 18, 1936. They were married for 65 years. Les worked in Edmonton at Safeway, Woodwards and Cross Town Motors. He was an active member of the Salvation Army Edmonton Temple.
Les was a fine musician, playing the violin, singing in various quartets and playing in the Salvation Army band. He was also an avid tennis player and especially loved golfing. In fact, he enjoyed his last game of golf at the fine age of 99 years and drove his car until September, 2007, several months after his 100th birthday.
Les relocated to Calgary in October, 2011 and enjoyed his final year with his family close by. He especially enjoyed the good visits from and the liveliness of his great granddaughter, Elena.
Les is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Jake Kroeker, two granddaughters, Paula and Kerri and one great granddaughter, Elena, all of Calgary. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 2001 and his three brothers Ray, Alf and Norman in earlier years.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Salvation Army Edmonton Temple, 9115 – 75 Street, Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.
