He was born in Sudbury, Ontario and raised in Wahanapitae, Ontario. The youngest of his brothers, he excelled at school, taking 2nd place in regional exams and attending the University of Queens at the young age of 16, leading him to achieve a PhD in Physics from the prestigious Massey College and the University of Toronto.
Ken is lovingly remembered by his children Derek and Stephen (Sarah) and his grandchildren Evan and Alyssa. He is also survived by his brother Walter (June); his nephews Wayne (Elizabeth) and Raymond; his nieces Kim (Stephen) Lacey, and Karri (David) Raffler; and his ex-wife and lifelong friend Patricia, who he met in the Math club while at Queens and later moved to Calgary with to raise their family. Ken is predeceased by his parents Karl and Herlinda and his older brothers Carl and Ernie.
Ken was a scrupulously honest and generous role model for his children, giving them many opportunities and beautiful homes. He was proud of his family’s success, and he loved to spoil his grandchildren and encourage their learning. Ken spent his career being a pioneer in Alberta’s oil sands industry, advancing the early development of SAGD, and was both well-known and highly respected for his contributions many years after his retirement. He was thoughtful, well-informed, always loved to discuss politics or the oil industry, and liked to read and be surrounded by nature.
As per Ken’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. For those who would like to remember Ken, in lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you take a moment to meet an old friend for lunch, hug your child or grandchild, sit by the river and watch the birds, or take a walk in the woods for a moment, an hour, or a day. Time waits for no one.
Rest in Peace Ken.
