Mom is now reunited with her long time partner, Paul Adelvard. She is survived by her sister Audrey Jean Krahenbil (Frederick); her four children, Brent Allen Smith, (Gae), Wendy Jean Mikkelsen, (Wayne), Belinda Grace Pratt, (Garry), Mark Dean Smith and their father, Mervyn Dean Smith (Myrna). She was blessed with 8 grandchildren; Alana Casement (Kevin), Colin Mikkelsen , Meghen McKenzie (Ryan), Katie Hulme (Matthew), Reynold Smith, Korsyn Smith, Shayla Smith (Tyler) and Dayton Pratt. As well as, 7 great-grandchildren; Kale, Claire, Leah, Sawyer, Rowan, Aubrey, and Arlen. Also, her many nieces and nephews, whom she also loved dearly. She was predeceased by her 2 brothers, Clifford and Lawrence Frederick, mother Grace and father Reynold all from Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, as well as, her sister Frances Litle from Fort MacLeod, Alberta.
Mom was born and raised on the family farm by her parents Grace and Reynold Frederick, in Garden Head, Saskatchewan. She attended Stone Pile School mostly on horseback. She then attended Shaunavon and Swift Current High. She met our father, Mervyn Dean Smith, from Tompkins, Saskatchewan, and they married and had their first child, Brent, in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. In search of a better life, they moved to Calgary, Alberta where they continued to raise the rest of their family. While staying at home to raise her children, Mom took in other children to support the family income, including some of our cousins. We were so blessed with lots of cousin and family time. After her children were grown, she went back to work at the Holy Cross Hospital. When it closed, she moved to the Rockyview Hospital, then retired in 2005.
Mom and Papa Paul (as we called him) spent many fun times camping, golfing and traveling to Arizona in the winter months.
She always blessed her grandchildren with sweet treats and celebrated all the fun holidays. She was truly an inspiration to her children and grandchildren, teaching by example - strength, character, generosity, compassion and the importance of joy, she had a great sense of humor. She always enjoyed playing cards, listening to live music and spending time with her family and friends.
“Joyce” always had a warm sparkle in her eye and a smile on her face. She will be dearly missed, but remembered with so much love and wonderful memories.
We would like to thank the amazing staff at Prince of Peace, South Calgary Campus and Millrise Senior Village for all their care and support.
A family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
