John is survived by his sons Roy and Randy and daughters Cindy Pack, Pam Orton and Barb McAllister as well as other numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. John was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Martha (Hellwig) and five brothers: Herb, Harold, Rube, Ken and Norm. John was born in Schuler, AB and grew up in Bassano, AB where he worked on a dairy farm and on the railroad before driving to Mewata Armories on May 20, 1942 to enlist in the Canadian Army. He served proudly in the Tank Corp in Belgium and Germany until discharged in 1946. While overseas, John joined the #1 Royal Canadian Legion and was recently awarded his 70 year pin. After the war, John came to Calgary and built his family home in Haysboro. He worked in the trucking business and later with the Provincial Government at SAIT. In retirement, John spent his time restoring old cars and travelling to California.
A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery Field of Honour.
