We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Herbert Schmidt on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 in Calgary, Alberta. He was born in November of 1930 to Heinrich & Lisa Schmidt in Rosenfeld, a German settlement in the Ukraine. In 1956, Herb, Ingrid and his immediate family left Germany by the ship named Colombia in order to build a better life in Canada. Herb was a bricklayer by trade, but a back injury led to a change and he became a painter-decorator. Herb and his older brother Arthur formed their own company, A&H Painting & Decorating, and the Schmidt brothers worked together for over 30 years. There are hundreds of homes in the Calgary area that benefitted from the skill, care and attention to detail that was A&H Painting.
Herb had many interests in his earlier years. He loved the outdoors, camping, hunting and especially fishing, to name a few of his favorite pastimes. He also loved to socialize, party and share a beer or two along with a “short one”. Proud of his heritage, The German Canadian Club played a big part in his life, and he was a member for many years with the Schutzen Club Diana and the Red & White Club.
Herb also loved to sing, and he and Ingrid were founding members of the mixed Choir Die Singgemeinschaft Calgary, and was a long-time member of the Calgary German Men’s Choir. Herb was a devout Lutheran and served as a Church Deacon for over 20 years at St. John Lutheran Church in Bridgeland.
Herb/Dad was proud, honest, loyal and loving. He always said that his family was the most important thing in his life. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ingrid; his children and their families, Ralph & Ronaye Schmidt, and Angie & Larry Albush; his grandchildren and their families, Amy & Cailean Wood, Lisa & James Howard, Robyn & Trevor Klein, and Colin Albush; and his great-grandchildren Logan, Brooks, Wyatt, Presley, Jack and Theodore.
A Memorial Service to honour Herbert will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at 2:00PM at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL (3220 4th Street NW, Calgary AB).
Memorial donations in Herbert’s name will be gratefully accepted by the Lung Association of Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
