Leona passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. She is survived by her son David, his wife, Cindy and stepson, Kenneth; and her beloved granddaughter, Jessica. Leona was predeceased by her loving husband of 43 years, Gerry; her brother, Walter; and her sister, Edna. Leona was born and raised on her family’s farm in Luseland, Saskatchewan. After college she left Saskatchewan, her path then took her to Edmonton, Los Angeles, Lethbridge, and Calgary where she ultimately settled to raise a family. She joined the Royal Bank of Canada in 1954 and stayed with RBC for much of her working career, retiring in 1995. Leona loved to explore life – her past through her work in genealogy and her present through her avid travelling. Mom was proud of her work with the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, where she served as a Trustee and then Director for over 12 years, and was presented with their Distinguished Service Award in 2015. Her travels took her throughout Europe, Russia, South America, Africa, and most places in North America, where high-lights included finding her ancestral home in Germany, watching Polar Bears in Canada’s arctic, climbing to the Sun Gate atop Machu Picchu, standing in the mists of Iguazu Falls in Argentina, and many hilarious trips with her family, from Cuba to the United Kingdom to Alaska and beyond. A kind and wise woman, her counsel was sought by many and the examples she set and the memories she leaves behind stand as an inspiration to all who knew her. A Celebration of Leona’s life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, AB (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at the Calgary Winter Club. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to charities of their choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
