Evelyn was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and raised on the family farm near Picture Butte, Alberta. She was strong-willed, determined, and fiercely independent and set an example for all by approaching life with vigour and enthusiasm. Creative and resourceful, she made costumes and puppets for her children and grandchildren, and parlayed her considerable talent for knitting into her own successful business for many years. Later, she would combine her love of fashion and her independent spirit into a career as a women’s fashion consultant.
Evelyn lived with kidney failure most of her life, but never let it define her. Even when on dialysis three times a week, she found ways to arrange a variety of trips and adventures with her children, Kim and Gary, from camping around southern Alberta, to Penticton and Vancouver, and even Disneyland; she found a way to make it work. While blessed with a kidney transplant, she took advantage of opportunities to travel to the UK and on several cruises with her husband, Terry, which they loved.
Evelyn will be lovingly remembered by her husband Terrence, children Kim (James) and Gary (Lisa), grandchildren Shaye, Ben, Rebecca and Stuart, brother Rick, sister Lydia and many fond friends. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, John and Annie Shimek, step-mother Kay Shimek, older brother Ed, younger brother Ken, father-in-law and mother-in-law Romeo and Dorothy Charlebois.
A private service to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Kidney Foundation of Canada https://kidney.ca.
