The family of Ed Lawrence sadly announce that he has gone “home” at the age of 91. Ed was born in Dodsland, Saskatchewan on June 10, 1922 to Ralph and Lillian (Hatton) Lawrence. He served in the army from 1941 to 1945 with the Algonquin Regiment.
Returning home to Dodsland, he resumed farming on the home place, living there until 1997 when he and Ruth moved to Calgary to be near his beloved daughter and her family. In 1953 Ed married Ruth Gillings of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. They lived on the farm, having one daughter, Tara.
Left to miss him are his wife Ruth, sister Evelyn, daughter Tara and her husband Bernard, and two grandsons, Donovan and Tyler, all of Calgary; a brother-in-law, Ted Gillings of Saskatoon, nephews Doug (Diane) and Jim (Colleen) and nieces Patti (Brian), Val (Kim) and Dawn (Joe) and their families. He was so proud of his family!
A quiet, gentle, unassuming man, Ed was well liked by those who knew him. Ed quietly suffered much pain in the past seven years – never complaining. He was happiest when working on some project around the house and yard. We love you, Ed, and look forward to that day when we shall meet again in your new “home”.
A Reception will be held at South Calgary Funeral Centre, 12700 Macleod Trail South, (at Lake Fraser Gate) Calgary on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed’s name directly to Canadian War Memorial Museum, 1 Vimy Place, Ottawa, ON K1A 0M8 or to the Veteran’s Food Bank, #1, 4539 – 6 St NE, Calgary, AB T2E 3Z6.
