Dorothy Mary Chorney

1936 - 2012

Dorothy passed away suddenly at the Foothill Hospital on Monday, July 2, 2012 at the age of 76 years. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Carol (Terry), and sons Wayne (Sherri) and Ken (Connie). She will also be sadly missed by grandchildren Marinna, Jenna and Adam; Michael; and Melissa and Alena. Dorothy is survived by sister Isabelle (Wilfred), brothers Ted (Gail), and Harold as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband Michael in 1987, father Lance in 1972, and mother Louise in 1993. Dorothy was born near Turtleford, Saskatchewan on June 13, 1936. She grew up on the family farm and attended Vimy Ridge country school. In 1955 she began her training as a Certified Nursing Assistant in Saskatoon, graduating in 1956. It was during this time that she met her husband to be, Mike, and they were married in Turtleford on July 3, 1958. Initially living in Lloydminster, they moved to Devon, Alberta where Wayne was born in July, 1959. Mike’s work in the oil business took the growing family to Calgary, twice to Drayton Valley where Carol was born in June, 1963; to Camrose twice, and on to Wainwright where Ken was born in February, 1965. Settling in Calgary in 1967 they purchased their one and only home, located in Varsity Acres, at that time the extreme northwest edge of the city, where she raised her family and remained until the time of her passing. Mike passed away in July, 1987 and with a now empty house she devoted her time to volunteer work at the Friends shop in the Foothills Hospital. She accumulated thousands of hours and received numerous awards for her service. Dorothy also enjoyed several trips with family and friends and was able to visit many places, including London, Paris, Aberdeen, Alaska, and The Panama Canal, among others. Grandma Dorothy also loved the big part she played in the lives of her six grandchildren. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, July 6, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, next to Mike in the Heritage Garden. “Together Forever”.
