Donald Stewart, beloved father, grandfather passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2016. Don was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Verna, by his parents Norman Stanley and Sarah Elizabeth, his sister Robina Ruth and his brother Alan Parker. Don leaves his sons Neil (Kathleen) of Red Deer, Brian (Paula) of Calgary and Craig of Smithers B.C.; as well as his treasured grandchildren Breanne (Adam) and Claire of Calgary and Erin (Bryson) of Vernon, B.C. Don was born and raised in Edmonton. He attended Westmount School, then NAIT focusing on Electronics and Communications. Don served with the RCAF from 1939 to 1945 achieving the rank of Flight Lieutenant. His knowledge in electronics and communications led him to be selected to attend the University of Manitoba to learn and subsequently teach RADAR Systems. This role led him on his wartime journey as a Radar Officer through Canada, Great Britain and eventually North Africa and Italy where he flew in Beaufort’s and Ventura’s. His post war career was with AGT until his retirement in 1975. Don’s number one priority was his family with whom there were many summers of camping and trailering. He was an avid supporter of his sons sporting activities and academic achievements. Don’s love of sports carried him into his retirement years, where he was an accomplished Masters Swimmer into his 80s. He also enjoyed curling, cross country skiing, hockey and many hours walking his dog. Don was a fine craftsman, especially enjoying woodworking and was also a Ham Radio Operator. He enjoyed travel, with one of his highlights being able to revisit his wartime base in Scotland with Verna. Don’s enduring legacy was that of strong principles, honesty, integrity, strong work ethic, and love and respect for nature. As per Don’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to Friends of the Colonel Belcher, 1939 Veterans Way N.W. Calgary, AB T3B 5Y8 or the SPCA, 17904 - 118 Avenue N.W, Edmonton, AB, T5S 2W3.
