1925-2012
Daphne passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2012 with family by her side. She will be sadly missed by John, her loving husband of fifty-seven years; daughters Lisa (Michael Gaunt) and Janis (Brian Nelson); grandchildren Breton (Brandy), Alix, Geordie and Chloe; sisters Myrtle Jones, Lorraine Bonnett and Florence Jacques; sister-in-law Joan Williams; extended family members and the many friends she made over the years. Daphne was born in Manitoba and grew up on a farm in Mulvihill, Manitoba from which she walked to school uphill both ways according to legend. She commenced a fifty year teaching career at the age of eighteen and met John while teaching at the Canadian Forces base in Churchill, Manitoba. Daphne was known for enthusiasm, creativity and unstinting generosity in whatever she did, from family gatherings, to teaching, to entertaining, to contributions to the community. She and John volunteered together for many years, especially with the Lions Club and STARS Air Ambulance. Daphne was the ultimate hostess and was renowned for her amazing cooking. No one left food on their plates at her house. Daphne's greatest joy was her grandchildren. She never tired of attending sports events, plays and recitals or hearing of their latest exploits. Even in the later stages of her illness, she perked up at the sight of her grandchildren or the sound of their voices. A celebration of Daphne's life will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street NW, Calgary on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 2:00pm. Daphne's family extends a special thank you to the wonderful caring staff at the Santuari Hospice at the Peter Lougheed Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations in Daphne's memory may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance or a charity of choice. Condolences may be forwarded through www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
