August 22, 1930-September 2, 2010
Colin was predeceased by his granddaughter, Gina Haigh and his beloved wife of twenty-nine years, Anne. He is survived by his son Dave Dick, stepsons Rob (Kathy) and John (Karly), and stepdaughter Elizabeth Haigh, and his grandchildren Katie, Laura, Gillian, Scott and Liam, as well as children from his first marriage, Jon Dick (Sylvana), and their daughter Morgan, Margaret Twittey and Heather Offet. Colin was born in Medicine Hat and was raised in various areas in Alberta; he settled in Calgary in the 1950’s. Colin married Anne in 1971, beginning what he always considered to be his greatest years. He was a member of the Calgary Chapter of the Appraisal Institute of Canada for many years until retiring in the 1980’s, and then embarked on a number of small business ventures. Colin was an avid full bore rifle shooter and was active in the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association. His love of shooting began as a teenager in the army cadets, and continued as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal 22nd regiment “Van Doos.” His proudest moments of his shooting life were representing Canada at the Bisley, England match in 1976, and acting as host to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh at the shooting events of the 1978 Commonwealth Games and working to find a new home for the Calgary rifle range. Colin also designed and implemented a recreational pellet shooting program for Albertans. During his retirement Colin and Anne became square dancers, enjoying their involvement with the “Gad Abouts” group. They also traveled extensively. It was during this time that he was introduced by Anne to the game of golf, which became a passion for Colin. He spent many days on the links with the Seniors’ Men’s Leagues at both Confederation Park and McCall Lake golf courses. This passion also became a business for him as an Accredited Professional Club Maker and inventor of the “Spine Finder”, which he sold worldwide over the internet. He also enjoyed curling with the Seniors Leagues at the Calgary Winter Club and as a drop in at the Huntington Hills Club. Although Colin was a quiet and private man, when he decided to do something, he did it whole heartedly. A Memorial Service was held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association 204, 2323 – 32 Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 6Z3.
