Christa Luise Laser (nee Golbeck), loving wife of Hellmut for 49 years, was welcomed into her eternal home on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at the age of 74 years. During the last years of her earthly journey, she struggled with fronto-temporal dementia (FTD), but even during this time, her heart was filled with joy, simple pleasures, and the unending worship of God, who granted her these 74 years. She continued to always trust in the promise that He would never leave her or forsake her and that “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear.” Hebrews 13:6.
Christa was born in Hagen Grinden, Germany, a small village close to Bremen. She loved to travel and see different parts of the world. After completing her three year apprenticeship at the “Deutsche Bank” in 1966, she spent one year in Geneva as an au pair in a French household. From there, her travels took her to Calgary, where she stayed with her aunt and uncle and worked at the Royal Bank. This is when she met Hellmut (Hal), and even though she returned to Germany after her Canadian adventure in 1968, she immigrated to Calgary a few years later, where she and Hal were married in 1971. Together, they lovingly raised two children. As a wife and a mother, she created a positive and nurturing home, always ensuring that her family felt cared for and loved. Her smile was radiant and her positivity was constant. Everything she did was guided by her love and devotion to her family and to God. As she served in her church community, Thornhill Baptist Church, she allowed her kindness and her gentle spirit to direct her actions. She often compassionately cared for the elderly or those who were ailing. As she grew more dependent on support herself in the later stages of her illness, God blessed her with equally compassionate caregivers. We give special thanks to those who tirelessly and lovingly supported Christa and spoke words of peace and love to her during the years in which she struggled with a disease that ultimately took her voice but not her spirit and her smile.
Christa was predeceased by her parents, Friedrich and Herta Golbeck; her sister, Doris, who died as an infant; and her older brother, Manfred. Christa is survived by, and will be lovingly remembered by, her husband Hal; her children Christoph (Shannon) of Vernon and Marcia (Jeff) Betcher of Calgary; as well as her six grandchildren Jacob, Caitlin, Anna, Lucas, Daniel, and Sophia.
