Catherine Engel

Catherine passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the age of 84. She was born April 18, 1925 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She met Christian Engel, a Canadian soldier and they married in Scotland on July 24, 1945. A year later she left Scotland, arrived in Canada and settled in Hanna, Alberta. She lived there for 49 years before moving to Calgary to be close to her family. She was a loving mother and proud grandmother. Catherine enjoyed movies, music, reading her Bible and attending Church. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Catherine is lovingly remembered by her children, Shirley (Bruce) Watts, Gordon (Glenna) Engel, Janice Engel; grandchildren Mark (Ashlea) Watts, Matthew Watts, Naomi (Dan) Kurz, Cory (April) Engel, Dan (Kathleen) Engel, Sheri (Troy) Robertson, Jeff (Tara) Engel; great grandchildren Kole, Kaylie, James, Justine, Gregory, Heather, Trista and Brooke. She will be remembered by family in Scotland, England, Australia, Labrador, Hanna, Calgary and area. Catherine was predeceased by her husband Chris on April 26, 1975; her parents; as well as five sisters and two brothers. The family would like to thank the caring, compassionate staff at Southwood Hospice as well as Pastor Scott Petersen, Pastor Jim Rasmussen and family and friends for all their love and support. Those wishing to pay their Respects did so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220-4 Street NW. Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A Funeral Service was held at Prince of Faith Lutheran Church, 2523 – 56 Street NE Calgary on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Hanna on Friday, February 19, 2010. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Southwood Hospice (211 Heritage Drive SE, Calgary AB T2M 1M9) or Canadian Lutheran World Relief (302 – 393 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg MB R3B 3H6).
