Audrey Sarah Weyman passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the age of 87 at the Rockyview General Hospital. She is survivied by her children, Valerie (Maurice) Comtois, Garry (Gail) and Wayne (Colleen), as well as by 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Percy Douglas Weyman. War Bride, loving mother and grandmother, Audrey enjoyed long chats at the kitchen table over a cup of tea. Her companionship and home baked goodies will be greatly missed. Audrey was born on May 25, 1923 in Lancaster, England to Thomas and Elizabeth Wood. Her idyllic English childhood was filled with long walks through the bluebells, Saturday afternoon at the picture show at the Grand Theatre, picnics at Heysham and Christmas pantomimes. Audrey’s dad could always rely upon her to polish the brass horse tack for Lancaster’s May Day festivities. As a teenager she enjoyed playing tennis, hiking and dancing to the big band sounds at Morecombe Pier. Audrey considered a career in the WAF but instead chose to work for the Canadians at the Canadian Treasury where she was responsible for accounting and soldiers’ pay. It was that decision that led her to Canada. Toward the end of the war, she met a handsome Canadian solder, Percy (Doug) Weyman, who was stationed at Canadian Military headquarters in Lancaster and was also working at the Canadian Treasury. After a brief courtship they were wed on September 15, 1945. In the spring of 1946, Doug returned to Calgary where he joined the Calgary police force. Audrey followed with their daughter Valerie on October 26, 1946, sailing form the Port of Liverpool on the hospital ship Empire Brent. Upon landing in Halifax, they traveled across Canada by train and arrived in Calgary on November 7, 1946. Within a few years of arriving in Calgary, two more children made the family complete with Garry arriving in October of 1948 and Wayne in May, 1950. When the children were young she enjoyed family outings to the Calgary Zoo and Riley Park. The family settled in Charleswood where they lived for more than 45 years. Audrey remained in her home until July, 2010. Audrey and Doug traveled extensively in North America and Europe but one of her favourite jaunts was to Banff. She especially loved spending time in the mountains during the Fall. She had many interests and was involved in the Alberta War Bride Association, but she enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at both the Foothills Hospital and the Rockyview General Hospital, and the staff at Staywell Manor of Garrison Woods for the kind and gentle care of their mother. At Audrey’s request, a Private Family Service was held. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made directly to Leprosy Mission Canada, 100 Mural Street, Suite 100, Richmond Hill, ON L4B 1J3. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
