Richard grew up in Odessa, TX and graduated from Odessa High School in 1965. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He served 2 tours in Vietnam and earned several medals of Honor in the 4 years of service to his country. He was a proud Vietnam vet and he loved his country deeply.
April 19, 1978 was the greatest day ever for Richard, his precious baby girl was born, Sonja Lowery. Sonja was his pride and joy and that relationship was two sided. Richard was also Sonja’s pride and joy and her rock. Richard was her prayer partner for any little or big thing that life threw their way.
In the summer of 1984, Richard started his 22-year career with the United States Postal Service in Austin. He transferred to Burnet in 1985. He was a route carrier until his retirement in 2008.
Richard was the friendliest mailman that always had a candy for the kids and his route customers. He was loved by all.
He was very faithful visiting and helping out all of his friends daily at the Oaks Nursing Home. All the patients loved seeing him walk through the doors. He was a blessing to them and they were a blessing to him. He was a helping hand to so many in the Burnet community.
He loved the Burnet Bulldogs and hardly missed a game with his best friend Jerry Hutson. They were also super fans of the Texas Longhorns. They had the opportunity to attend several Texas Longhorn games.
He was an active member at The First Assembly of God Church in Burnet. He was a godly man and loved the Lord with all his heart.
