George enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 in 1944. During his time in the Navy, George became an airplane mechanic and a navigator. In 1957, George met and fell in love with Geneva Gange and together they had 5 children. For the first 10 years of George and Geneva’s marriage, the family moved several places due to George’s career in the Navy. According to his daughter, Cathy Bryan, the family lived Corpus Christi, TX, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines and then to San Diego, CA. After serving for 22 years in the Navy, George retired as a Chief Petty Officer.
After taking some time off to be with his wife and family, George began working for the Union as a heavy equipment operator and a mechanic. George worked for the Union for over 20 years.
Because George needed to keep himself busy, he started volunteering with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. During this time, George started training to get his pilot’s license. After he received his license he began to fly and help the US Coast Guard at the border and helped with the Homeland Security Department.
Sadly, George lost his wife Geneva in 2006, while living in Burnet. Together they shared 49 years of marriage. It was in 2007, George retired from the auxiliary.
In 2009, George went with his daughter Cathy one evening the bowling alley. It was there a strike was made at the age of 84 when he met and fell in love with Nancy Harrold. George and Nancy married on May 23, 2009. Together they shared 10 years of marriage until Nancy passed away in 2019.
George is proceeded in the death by his parents, Thomas and Jessie Funderburk, 2 brothers, his first wife, Geneva Funderburk and most recently, Nancy Funderburk.
George is survived by his daughters, Beverly (Wayne McDowlle) Lloyd; his daughter Donna Schultz; Karen (Fred) Hodge; Cathy (Terry) Bryan, his son, Bruce Funderburk. Also survived by Nancy’s children, Diane Shultz, Rick Harrold, and Mike Harrold. He is also survived by 11 Grandchildren and 13 ½ Great Grandchildren.
Services for George are being held at First Baptist Church of Burnet on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Doug Lindley and Pastor Ross Chandler of First Baptist Church Marble Falls. Private interment will follow at Capital Memorial Park in Pflugerville.
