Albert Arliss “Al” Hudgins was born on July 22, 1932, in Wichita Falls to Avis Alta Hudgins and William Price Hudgins. His early years were spent traveling as his father was a lineman and they moved frequently for work. After his father’s untimely death, the family moved back to Bertram where Al grew up and met the love of his life Mary Lou Bryan. They were later married on February 4, 1953. Their only child Darrel "Hutch" was born in January 1954.
He joined the United States Air Force when he turned 18 and was stationed in Del Rio at Laughlin Air Force Base where he was an aircraft mechanic. As the Vietnam War broke out, he was transferred overseas, and they spent time in Germany and the Philippines before returning to Sherman where he finished his military career and retired from the Air Force in 1970.
Shortly after retiring he moved his family to Austin and opened Alberts Texaco at the intersection of I35 and 183. He later sold the service station and moved to Mary’s family farm in Burnet on Mormon Mill Road. He worked the land and raised cattle, hay, and sold and hauled top soil. He had many hobbies and ventures including bowling for which he won several awards, real estate sales and rentals, playing golf at Inks and later at Delaware Springs where he earned the nickname “The Lizard”, playing cards with his friends and loved to play music and sing. If fact he helped to build the amphitheater behind the Dairy Queen in Burnet. He was always smiling and quick to tell a joke or pull a prank.
