February 14, 1926 - January 7, 2021
Mrs. Winnie Choy was born on February 14, 1926, in Swatow, Guangdong Province, China.
She was the 4th of 11 children, and 2nd of 5 girls from the family of Mr. HSU Hing Choey and
Mrs. CHAN Chou Chang. Winnie received training in nursing in Shanghai before moving to
Hong Kong to marry Mr. Harry Sik-Yeung Choy on July 16, 1947, at The Church of St. Paul,
Hong Kong. God blessed them with 4 children: Paul, Robert, Evelyn and Samuel. Besides being
a godly mother to her children, Winnie also worked as a store manager at Swatow Drawn Work
Company, a Choy family business, in Hong Kong. On July 5, 1969, the family of 6 immigrated
to Vancouver, Canada.
Winnie was a second generation Christian. Following in her parents’ faith, she gladly accepted
Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She attended Kowloon Tong Church of the Chinese
Christian and Missionary Alliance in Hong Kong, and then Vancouver Chinese Alliance Church,
where she served as deaconess and Sisters Fellowship president. Her unwavering faithfulness
to God and genuine love for all made her a modest yet respected senior in the church. At home
in her quiet time, she was a prayer warrior too, remembering at the throne of grace each of her
children and any special needs she could think of daily.
Winnie enjoyed God’s abundant blessings with gratefulness, including: singing hymns and daily devotions, posing for photos, wearing ‘cheung sarms’ and purple clothing, knitting, driving stick-shift, tending to her fruit trees in the backyard and making jams, pies and Swatow 'dragon boat rice dumplings' with Harry, and chatting with her big sister Mu Lan on the phone.
With the onset of dementia, Winnie lived with Samuel’s family for a year and half for better care
before moving to Dogwood Lodge, a long-term care home, on January 10, 2012.
Winnie was received into glory at the age of 94 on January 7, 2021.
She will be forever cherished by her 4 children: Paul (Molly); Robert (Peggy); Evelyn (Raymond); and Samuel (Karen)
10 grandchildren: Noah (Katherine); Enos (Shirley); Jeremy; Bernard; Jocelyn (Gian-Paolo); Jacqueline; Braden; Jared; Adam; and Carleigh
4 great grandchildren: Cameron; Peyton; Leona; and Linden
