December 16, 1956 - December 11, 2019
It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our loving Father, Mike “Mick Tupelo” Dennis. Born in Vancouver, he is predeceased by his parents James Dennis and Norah Dennis. He will be immensely missed by his 4 heartbroken children: Matteo Mezzomo, Ava Mezzomo, Adamo Mezzomo and Mikey Dennis. Mike had been battling Muscular Dystrophy (IBM) for many years. He battled it hard with his pride, courage and incredible inner strength. His last days were full of bravery, surrounded by his 4 children, the greatest Loves of his life. He was a loving Father, proud of every milestone, joyful for every accomplishment. He will be incredibly missed by his children’s mothers: Suzy Mezzomo and Niki Jenkins, who were both his closest friends.
Until his early retirement due to IBM, Mike worked as a Manager with Service Canada and was loved and respected by all. Mike led a very full life. He played hockey in Winnipeg until his teens, then went on to being an accomplished motorcycle racer in the 70s & 80s: flat track, motocross, ice racing and road racing, winning races throughout Canada and the Midwest. Mid 80s Mike discovered punk rock and his life changed. Cue in stage name: Mick Tupelo. Some of his bands included Bill of Rights, House of Commons, The Deadcats, The Rocketfins and The Highsiders. He loved rockabilly, psychobilly, surf, punk. He was the founder/owner of Flying Saucer Records. Mick travelled and toured throughout Canada, USA and Europe. Due to his IBM, Mick switched from upright bass to guitar. When taping a pick to his fingers did not work any longer, he gave up his instruments and concentrated on vocals. Mick was a born frontman. Mickfest 2017 - a gathering of musicians and friends in his honour, was humbling for him.
Mick will always be known as an amazing musician and a true Vancouver icon, The Godfather of Canadian Psychobilly/Rockabilly. He will be fondly remembered by his siblings, extended family, abundance of friends, bandmates, former coworkers and fans. A beautiful human being, Mike’s kindness, humour, and love of life will be cherished in all who were lucky enough to cross paths. As per Mike’s wishes, there will be no service.
