He is survived by his 2 children: Julia (Hon) and Desmond (Emma), his son-in-law (Jerome), 8 grand children, and 14 great grand children. He is predeceased by his wife (Yee Chan Lau) and daughter (Joyce).
Yuen Wun was born on October 17, 1918 in the village of Loong On Lae, Hoiping, Guangdong Province, China. He married Yee Chan Lau from the neighbouring village of Wunggong in 1945.
He was the youngest of 3 sons. Whereas his two older brothers emigrated to Peru to seek opportunities, he instead struck out to Fiji in his early 30’s in search of his golden mountain.
In his exceptionally long life, he has lived for many years in each of these 3 countries; China (33 years), Fiji Islands (21 years) and Canada (50 years).
His simple lifestyle with no vices to speak of and his daily consumption of fresh vegetables must have been the key secrets to his longevity. Amazingly, he was still driving in his early 90’s.
We sadly mourn his passing, but at the same time wish to celebrate a life well lived.
He will be missed but keenly remembered for his quiet and unassuming nature, willingness to help others, never forgetting a kind gesture, being a voracious reader of newspapers, and very much a self-taught person.
We are all grateful for all that he has done for us, the values he has imparted to us and the solid foundation he has laid for future generations. Our growing family is truly indebted to him and mum for their courageous decision to move to Canada in 1972, in pursuit of a better life for us and future generations. Their legacy will endure and will forever remain a crucial part of our family’s history. We love him and we will surely miss his seemingly never-ending presence.
He will be buried alongside his wife and companion of 78 years at Ocean View Cemetery according to his final wishes on May 20, 2023.
