Frances Hok-Chai Ng, aged 87, passed away on June 19, 2024, at St. Michaels Hospice in Burnaby, surrounded by her four sons: Kelvin, Tim (Eva), Rick (Kazue), and Will (Rina), along with other family members. She was born on December 24, 1936, in Canton, China, and spent her early years in Hong Kong where she worked as a primary school teacher.
In 1965, Frances relocated to Vancouver with her husband Wally Hung Shui Ng (predeceased) and her two elder sons. After raising her family, Frances pursued her passion for Culinary Arts at VCC, earning the Lieutenant Governor’s Silver Medal for academic excellence. She then worked as a cook at Yaletown House until her retirement in 2001.
Throughout her retirement years, Frances remained active caring for her 8 grandchildren: Natalie (Sam), Nathan, Brandon, Everett, Alicia, Talisa, Lauren, and Max. She enjoyed tending to her beloved vegetable and flower gardens, and knitting with her volunteer group at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Frances wholeheartedly embraced her weekly Bible Study group and seamlessly transitioned to Zoom during the pandemic. Though her Tai Chi sessions were halted due to pandemic restrictions, she continued to volunteer as a driver for those in need.
Frances cherished her independence and found immense joy in bringing her family together through holiday meals and Sunday dinners, a tradition she maintained until recent weeks.
Visitation will be held from 7 – 9 PM on Friday, July 19th, and a Memorial Service will take place at 10 AM on Saturday, July 20th, at Ocean View Funeral Home (4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby), followed by interment.
Memorial Donations may be made to St. Michael’s Hospice and/or BC Cancer Society.
