Ian passed away as he lived his life, unwilling to give up without a fight; a man of tremendous strength. Ian immigrated from England at the age of six with his father, Vincent, mother Katherine, brother Gerald and sister Tina.
As a sea cadet in Vancouver at the beginning of WW II, Ian went to Kings College in Halifax for officer training. From 1941 until the end of WW II, he saw active duty on a number of vessels on the east coast and finished his military career as Lt. Commander on HMCS Inch Arran on convoy duty in the North Atlantic. It was while operating out of the port of Halifax that he met the love of his life, Marian Moore. They were married in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on April 3, 1944. Returning to Vancouver after the war, Ian attended UBC, obtained his Bachelor of Commerce and then his Chartered Accountant designation and with a friend, Dave Dyke, founded Dyke and Howard in 1951 (known as D&H Group today). Ian left public practice in1962 when he purchased Columbia Plastics Ltd., one of his clients.
One of Ian’s greatest joys was mentoring young people, and he touched too many people to name here.
In his final days, Ian said that one of the things that meant the most to him was his relationship with his grandsons, Matthew and Patrick Howard. He loved them so unconditionally, enjoyed the recounting of their exploits and was just so proud of them. Ian felt he had left “footprints in the sand”.
Ian was predeceased by his mother, Katherine, father Vincent and brother Gerald. Survived by his wife, Marian, sons Greg (Jane) and Brent (Mary), grandsons Matthew and Patrick, sister Tina, nephews John (Leslie), Reg (Rita) and Ron.
In California; sister-in-law Phyllis, nephew Bruce (Lynne), nieces Wendy (Kevin) and Leslie (John).
In Nova Scotia; nephew Ian (Deirdre), nieces, Deanne, Valerie, Jean and Jo-Anne.
