Mrs. Carol Lillian Brainerd

December 8, 1929 - January 23, 2023

The youngest daughter of Lloyd and Emily 'Cissie' Gibbons, Carol was born in the St. Charles neighbourhood of Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 8, 1929. After she graduated from Woodhaven School in 1946, the family relocated to Vancouver where Carol soon found work at the telephone company. While attending a wedding with her mom she met Roy Brainerd, the only other single attendee. Their relationship rapidly flourished and they were married on January 26, 1951.

Their loving marriage of 71 years produced three daughters who share many of Carol's traits, values and affections. She ran an efficient household and always found the time to help others, being a very active volunteer in the community. She loved sewing, baking and garage sales. She had a special talent and passion for knitting, which she was able to do until very recently.

The young couple remained in Vancouver and New Westminster for the first 22 years of their marriage where Carol worked tirelessly raising the girls and supporting Roy in his early career with Snap-On Tools. In 1973, Carol and Roy moved to Edmonton with their youngest daughter and remained there until Roy retired and they moved to Burnaby.

Carol and Roy's love of travelling and their new found time led to 'work' as escorts for a tour company spending many of their early retirement years on trips around the world. The extra time afforded by Roy's retirement also allowed them to become more active as volunteers in a wide range of community causes which they continued as long as they could. When they could no longer participate in person, they supported their favourite causes with generous financial contributions.

Carol was pre-deceased by Roy and her great grandson River in 2022. Survived by her three loving daughters Susan (Ralph), Linda (Barry) and Jayne (Julian), 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, her sister Doreen Speers and many nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life will be held in the Discovery Room at Burnaby Village, 6501 Deer Lake Avenue, Burnaby on Sunday February 26 from 3:30–6:30 pm.
