On July 14, 2024, the world lost a beloved person, Betty Sun Oi Mah née Wong, who passed away at the age of 80. Born on November 9, 1943, Betty led a remarkable life filled with love, compassion, and laughter.
Betty was born in Canton, China. As the eldest of nine children, her nurturing nature quickly became apparent in caring for her siblings. She moved to Hong Kong before immigrating to Canada in 1967 with her husband, Jack. Driven by her passion for cooking, she soon established herself as a renowned entrepreneur and chef. Together with her husband, she opened Golden Coin restaurant, first in Dunbar and later in Richmond, followed by the one she was most proud of: Betty’s Fish & Chips in Burnaby. Each quickly became a local favourite and a cornerstone of its community. Her smile and welcoming spirit made her restaurant not just a place for delicious meals, but a hub where memories were made. When she wasn’t devoting herself to her restaurants, Betty adored time spent with her friends, especially around the Mahjong table and she was active with the Mah Benevolent Society.
Though she had many roles throughout her life, none made her prouder than the role of grandmother. Mama, as she was affectionately called, found immense joy and fulfilment in every moment spent with her four grandchildren: Ryan, Kobe, Clara and Taylor. And there were many, many moments spent together because Mama eagerly took on the role of caregiver when the parents were working. The bonds she developed with her grandchildren will continue to enrich and shape each of them throughout the course of their lives.
She is predeceased by her husband, Jack Wei Yo Mah, to whom she was married for more than 40 years. She is survived by her two loving sons, Roger and Robert, her mother Bo Chu, and her four adoring grandchildren. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched through her kindness and exceptional cooking, especially those who had the pleasure of dining on her famous fish and chips.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the BC Cancer Foundation in appreciation of the phenomenal care and support she received during her battle with cancer.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 10:00 am on July 31, 2024 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home at 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, BC.
