Allan was born in Zhongshan, China on April 24, 1928. He immigrated to Vancouver, BC in the early 1950’s and worked as a labourer on local farms in Burnaby and Ladner.
While working as gardener in Shaughnessy he met Priscilla Chow who worked for the same family as a governess. Allan and Priscilla were married on February 28th, 1959. They raised a family with the birth of their son Dennis, and daughters Denise and Dixie.
Allan worked as a sawmill worker making cedar shingles and shakes at a mill located on the Barnet Highway in Burnaby at Bestwood, at the location that is now the Barnet Marine Park. When that mill closed, Allan purchased a share at Richmond Plywood, where he worked until he retired when he was 70 years old.
Allan cut lawns and continued to garden, raising small backyard crops that he sold to grocery stores in Chinatown. The backyard was always filled with vegetables including tomatoes, Chinese chives, zucchini, green beans, and bok choy. Neighbours, friends and family were appreciative of his generosity sharing the produce he grew.
Allan worked hard supporting his immediate family in Canada and his extended family in China. Over the years, Allan also helped several family members immigrate to Canada and assisted others, including his grandchildren with their secondary education.
He had a passion for gardening, enjoyed reading both Chinese and English newspapers, and following the stock market. Every other year he travelled back home to China to visit family and explored the sites and cultures throughout Asia.
Allan and Priscilla resided in the same home in Vancouver from 1959 until 2020.
Allan is survived by his wife Priscilla; children Dennis and partner Maple Chow; Denise and Don Dhalian; Dixie and Kenneth Pukanich, and grandchildren Dayton Pukanich and Kyra Pukanich; Brother Ming Wong and spouse Cindy.
Allan was predeceased by his parents, Man Yick and Lei Yee Wong; his brother Yun Biu “Bill” Wong; and sister Sin Yue Liang.
The funeral service and interment will be held at 1:00pm on Feb 20, 2023 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Burnaby, BC.
