Samuel Marcus Wilson was born on August 9, 1955 in Herlong California, the son of Marcus and Sara Wilson. Being the son of an Air Force officer, his family made frequent moves throughout the United States and South America before settling in San Antonio. Sam graduated from Holmes High School in San Antonio, Texas and moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas in 1974 where he remained until his move to Bryan, TX in 2008. Sam passed away while traveling for business on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 in Fairhope, Alabama after complications from a short illness.
Through the course of his professional career, Sam devoted his life to others and to public service. For the last 9 years, Sam was a Training Specialist with the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service’s Emergency Service Training Institute. During his tenure with TEEX, he delivered training to emergency responders throughout the world. Prior to his service with TEEX, Sam served as Director of the Texas Department of Health Services Division of Emergency Preparedness from 1999-2003 and the Deputy Director from 1994-1999. In this capacity, he was responsible for the State of Texas’s preparations for, and response to health and medical disasters and emergencies. From 1980-1992 he served the City of Austin as a senior paramedic, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) instructor, and district EMS Commander with the City of Austin EMS Department.
Sam is survived by his wife of 17 years, Brenda Wilson, his parents Marcus and Sara Wilson and sister Cynthia Wilson. He is survived by three children, Jennifer Wilson-Morales and her husband Adam, James Wilson and his wife Camille, and Kate Wilson. In addition, he is survived by two step-children, Tasha Carlton and husband Kevin, and Shannon Blake. Eight grandchildren also survive him.
Sam was preceded in death by his sister, Patti Wilson-Wimberley.
A visitation will be held on Monday October 6 from 5:30-7:30PM at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, TX. A celebration of Sam’s life will take place at 1:00PM on Tuesday October 7 at the funeral home.
