Jo Ann Locke, 86, of Bryan, Texas passed away on January 24, 2019. She was born on March 12, 1932 to Fred W. Locke and Bertha Walker Locke. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1949. Jo Ann attended Sam Houston State Teacher’s College (now Sam Houston State University) where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 and a Master of Education degree in 1958. She taught 4th grade in Navasota for two years and taught with Bryan ISD for 33 more years at both Stephen F. Austin and Bryan High. Her favorite subjects were history and senior English. After she retired from teaching in 1990, she continued her love for education by supervising student teachers at Texas A&M University for another ten years.
Jo Ann loved spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed discovering new adventures by traveling on summer vacations every year with her family. In addition to her work in the community, her favorite pastimes were reading, cooking, and watching sports, especially Texas A&M football and basketball.
Jo Ann was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Bryan where she was a part of the Neighborly Sunday School Class. Her interest in history and her family led her to join the Robert Henry Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas where she was a 25-year member. She was a member of the Brazos Valley Retired School Personnel, Crestview volunteer, member of the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association, member and past president of the Woman’s Club, past president and board member of the Bryan ISD Education Foundation, and 2014 BISD Education Foundation Hall of Honor Honoree.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Bertha Locke, sister, Jean Moses, brother-in-law, Dayton Moses, and nephew, Michael Moses.
Jo Ann is survived by her nieces, Melinda Moses, Michele Schrader and her husband, Brian, and Brenda Ross Moses (wife of the late Michael Moses). She is also survived by five great-nephews and one great-niece: the four Schrader boys - Steve and wife, Tiffany, Chris and wife, Whitney, Drew and wife, Kelly, and Todd; Lee Ross; and Taylor Moses; and five great-great nieces and nephews. Close surviving cousins are Joe Brooks Thompson and wife, Charlotte, Neal Thompson and wife, Becky, and Lynn Walker and wife, Bonnie.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 27th from 4:00-6:00 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. There will be a celebration of her life on Monday, January 28th at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Bryan. Interment will follow at Alexander Cemetery near Tabor, Texas.
