Anthony Luke Scamardo

Visitation will be held from 4:00- 6:00 PM with a Rosary starting at 6:00 PM on Sunday September 24th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 402 West 1st Street, Hearne, Texas 77859. A Funeral Mass is set for Monday, September 25th at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hearne. Interment follows at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hearne.

Anthony L. Scamardo was born March 13, 1928 in Steele Store, Texas, a farming community 12 miles west of Bryan, to first generation immigrants from Poggioreale, Sicily. He attended Mumford School and then later Hearne High School graduating in 1945. After high school graduation, Anthony attended Texas A&M graduating in 1949 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Post graduation, for ROTC he was called into active duty in 1952 to Fort Knox, Kentucky. During his duty there, he met Mary Joyce Krebs. Anthony Scamardo was honorably discharged at the rank of 1st Lieutenant on May 31st 1954 and subsequentially married Mary Joyce on November 6th of that same year in Louisville, Kentucky.

Anthony passed on his love and passion for farming and ranching to two of his sons who joined him on the farm and ranch, carrying on the family business to this day. He loved four things in life: his Catholic faith, his family, farming and ranching, and his Italian heritage. Anthony was elected President of the Mumford School Board in 1968 and continued to serve for 55 years, making him the longest tenured president of a school board in Texas history.

Anthony is survived by his wife of 69 years Mary Joyce (Krebs) Scamardo, his daughters; Mary Scamardo Marwil and husband Lindsay Marwil, Martha Scamardo Szydlowski and husband Mark Szydlowski; his sons; Anthony Luke Scamardo Jr. and wife Eileen Scamardo, Edward Dominic Scamardo and wife Tricia Scamardo, Luke Anthony Scamardo and wife Susan Scamardo. Anthony is also survived by 15 grandchildren; Mark Marwil and wife Lindsey Marwil, Jessica How and husband Mark How, Scott Marwil and wife December Marwil, Luke Scamardo Jr. and wife Sarina Scamardo, Jennifer Scamardo, Sarah Szydlowski, Julianne Scamardo, Bethany Kasprowicz and husband Evan Kasprowicz, Nicholas Scamardo, Emily Scamardo, Mary Katharyn Scamardo, Edward Scamardo Jr. and wife Danielle Scamardo, Amanda Scamardo, Sydney Scamardo, Allison Rose Scamardo; and 9 great grandchildren; Nolan Marwil, Pierce How, Sophie How, Kolbe Kasprowicz, Clyde Marwil, Lacey Kasprowicz, Leroy Marwil, Luke Scamardo III, Brynlie Marwil.

Anthony is preceded in death by his father, Luke Peter Scamardo, his mother Mary Varisco Scamardo, his brother Peter Luke Scamardo, and his sister Betty Marie Beard.
