Always a loving wife and mother, she had a joy of life which also earned her many good friends of all ages and from all walks of life. Her children fondly recall dancing and singing in the kitchen with their mother, who was an excellent Southern cook. Veronica had a sharp mind, a playful sense of humor, and had no problem speaking her mind when it was called for.
She was also a talented artist, and avid antique and cookbook collector. She loved painting her beloved coastal Georgia marshes as much as she enjoyed painting “found” objects like doors, furniture, and turpentine buckets. In her earlier years, much of her artwork was displayed in galleries and shops around the Golden Isles. She also ran several of her own shops, in and around Glynn County. As a young woman, Veronica worked as a server at The Cloister on Sea Island and lived in the dormitories there. It was during this time that she met her husband of 66 years.
Veronica was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband John M. Thomas; her parents, George M. and Nellie Smith; and her siblings, Gwen Foreman, George M. Smith Jr., and Malcom Smith. She is survived by her children, Christy T. Slocum and her husband Andy and John M. Thomas Jr. and his wife Rhonda, and Lisa Thomas. She is also survived by four grandsons, Tim Slocum and his wife Bethany, Josh Slocum and his wife Kelli, John M. Thomas III, and Jason Thomas; great grandchildren, Molly, Andrew, Thomas, Alden, and Edwin Slocum also survive, as well as close, family members in Texas, and Savannah, Georgia.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 25, from 4 until 5 p.m. at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, with a brief service to honor her life following at 5 p.m. A committal service will take place Wednesday, October 26 at 10:30 in Palmetto Cemetery, Brunswick.
