She was born in London, England. After their home was destroyed during the Blitz in World War II, her family moved to Stratton-St. Margaret, near Oxford, where she grew up. After the war, Susan came to the United States where she practiced nursing in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and in Rhode Island. Later, she became an airline stewardess for Eastern Airlines, based in Miami, Florida, where she met Bob Torras, an Air Force pilot, stationed in Homestead, Florida. They married in 1958 and then moved to Atlanta where they had four children while Bob returned to school at Georgia Tech and started work for a company he now owns. During the next twenty years Susan was very active raising four children and as a volunteer for various charities including Piedmont Hospital, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Decorator’s Showhouse projects.
In 1978, Bob expanded his Atlanta business interests to include several companies back in his hometown of Brunswick, Georgia the family moved to St. Simons where Judge Anthony Alaimo officiated her American citizenship.
Susan is survived by her husband, Robert M. Torras, Sr and children: Deborah Torras and J. Brian Torras of Atlanta GA, and Robert M. Torras, Jr. of St. Simons island, Georgia. She was pre-deceased by daughter, Margaret Torras Moore of Savannah, Georgia. Her grandchildren are Michael and Joey Torras, Ashley Moore Brennan, Molly Moore, Austin and Katie Torras and great grandchild, Eloise Brennan.
A visitation will take place at the Edo Miller Funeral Home on Highway 17 in Brunswick on Sunday, November 19 between 4 and 6pm. The funeral service will be at 2:00pm, Monday, November 20, at the Saint Simons Presbyterian Church located at 205 Kings Way on Saint Simons with a reception to follow at the church. The internment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia or Hospice of the Golden Isles.
