In great sadness we announce the death of Sharon Marie Musick Hanson. After a courageous battle with cancer, she peacefully passed on to her heavenly home on Saturday April 21, 2018. She is the daughter of the late Ralph and Maxine Musick. She is survived by her husband, Brent Hanson of St. Simons Island; her daughter, Taylor Hanson Haley, also of St. Simons Island; her daughter Holly Hanson Fussell of Washington, DC; and her son Harmon Hanson of Denver, Colorado. Known and called by “YaYa”, Sharon leaves a precious legacy in her five grandchildren: Lanier, Cassie, Thorpe, Celia and Maxine. She is also survived by her brother Ken Musick, and her sister Monica Corbett, both of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Sharon was born on March 28, 1952 in Decatur, Georgia. She grew up in Albertville, Alabama, and graduated from Albertville High School and then Jacksonville State University where she was a marching ballerina in their award-winning band. She married her husband Brent in 1975. Their sweet love story began in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and after stops in Atlanta and Sulphur, LA, Sharon moved with her husband and three children to St. Simons Island. It was here that she truly settled -- soaking up the sun and inspiring physical fitness and Christian faithfulness for over 31 years.
In her early adult years, Sharon taught middle school science. As her family grew and her lifestyle and interests evolved, she pursued a career as a fitness instructor and personal trainer. She invested herself deeply in the life and work of St. Simons First Baptist Church and community Bible studies, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School classes, guiding youth groups and supporting fellow cancer patients. Sharon loved gathering with friends and family, planning and embarking on adventures, decorating her home, shopping ‘til she dropped, playing tennis, riding bikes, running, trying new things, dominating in board games and curating fabulous outfits for every occasion.
Sharon impacted so many lives through her inspiring and motivating persona as a fitness professional, through her tireless pursuit of a relationship with Christ in community with others, and through her valiant fight against cancer. She was always seeking to serve and care for others, even in the last days of her life. She was a dedicated and supportive wife, mother, sister and friend, and was tenacious and relentless in her pursuit of a full, rich life. She is already greatly missed by those who have been blessed by knowing her.
A visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday April 27, 2018 at The Club on St. Simons Island from 5:00pm-7:00pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Simons First Baptist Church at 10:00am on Saturday April 28, 2018.
