Roy Gene Hanna, 81, of Brunswick, departed this life February 23, 2016 at his residence. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 11AM in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Guffey officiating.
Born February 19, 1935 in Savannah, Tennessee to the late Ruel and Velta Hanna, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a retired United States Navy Veteran and a retired Glynn County Firefighter. Mr. Hanna served aboard the USS Hornet and was involved in the recovery of the Apollo 11 Space Capsule and had the privilege of being one of the first men to shake the astronauts’ hands. He also served aboard the USS Roosevelt on the hangar deck, and the USS Antietam working on the flight deck. During his military service, he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. In 1970, he requested to be sent to Naval Air Station Glynco in Brunswick. There he worked in drug education, retention leadership, and minority affairs. He was then assigned to a second tour aboard the USS Roosevelt as a flight deck director and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1976. He then joined the Glynn County Fire Department, and was a role player at FLETC. He also worked for Albert Crews as a director for the Captains Table Restaurant. Mr. Hanna was a family man and man of God, he always prayed for the President, our country, and those serving in the military. He served as a deacon at Northside Baptist Church. He witnessed to many people in need and left them with a pocket cross and salvation track to always remind them of God’s love. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He also took pride in his gardening and yard work skills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eddie Hanna and Tony Hanna, and a son-in-law Jack Boyet.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years Georgia Hanna of Brunswick, two daughters, Ramona Boyet of Brunswick, and Anna Durrance and husband Keith of Hortense, 3 grandchildren, Tara Rocha and husband Todd, Jason Boyet and wife Emily, Daniel Durrance and wife Holly, 5 great-grandchildren, Emily and Evan Rocha, Karsen and Jack Boyet, and Katherine Durrance, one sister, Martha Muller of Portageville, MO, 2 nieces, 1 nephew, and 1 great-niece.
The family will receive friends Tuesday morning, March 1, 2016 from 10AM until the funeral hour at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. www.edomillerandsons.com
