Affectionately known as Rap, he was the son of Betty Cole Ashcraft Powell and Ralph Amon Powell, Sr. He was born December 28.1963 in Artesia, New Mexico. Raised in Atlanta by his mother and his beloved Aunt, Mary Earle Ashcraft, Rap spent summers on his father’s ranch in Midland, Texas and would return to Atlanta with broken bones. He had little fear and when thrown from a horse, would get right back on! By one count, he had broken his collarbone a dozen times. He attended The Westminster School in Atlanta, and graduated from Christ School in Asheville, NC. Rap attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. A natural athlete, Rap excelled at golf and tennis. He was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs. He adored all of his beloved dogs. He never met a stranger, and was kind to everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Cole Ashcraft Powell of Sea Island and Ralph Powell, of Matador, Texas; his maternal grandparents, Betty Cole Ashcraft and Gustavus Hendrick Ashcraft; his paternal grandparents, Eugene and Jessie Powell of Midland, Texas; his beloved aunt, Mary Earle Ashcraft, and his uncle, Lee Ashcraft.
He is survived by his son, John Thomas Powell, and his beloved dog, Jackson.
