Lt. Col. Quinton Lamar Slaughter, US Air Force/Georgia National Guard, Retired, 80, of Brunswick, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013, at the Southeast Georgia Health System after an extended illness. Lt. Col. Slaughter served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and retired after numerous years of service in both the Georgia Air and Army National Guards. He retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company (AT&T) after 33 years of service and was proud to have been known to his many friends, co-workers and customers as “Pete The Telephone-Man”.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, September 23, 2013, in the Patriot Room of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home between the hours of 6 pm and 8 pm. A memorial service with Masonic Rights will be held Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at 11:00 am, at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Crandall and Rev. Thomas McMillan officiating. Committal Service with military honors will be at Palmetto Cemetery.
Quinton Slaughter was a life-long native of Brunswick, born September 25, 1932, to the late J.C. and Susan Slaughter. He was a graduate of the Glynn Academy Class of 1950; a proud member of the Glynn Academy ‘49 State Championship football team; and, a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Brunswick where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class No. 5 and member of the First Praise Choir.
Aside from his church affiliations, Quinton “Pete” Slaughter held numerous Masonic offices including past president of Brunswick Shrine Club, as well as past president of Ocean Lodge 214 and of Atlantic Daylight Lodge. He was also a past president of Golden Isles Council of the Telephone Pioneers of America; and Union President of Communication Workers of America, Brunswick Division.
He enjoyed fishing on the Satilla River with his wife, Mary Frances Smith Slaughter and the late Jimmie H. Slaughter. “Papa” Slaughter also enjoyed golf, gardening and spending time with his family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be missed by his special K-9 companion and riding partner, “Prissy”.
Quinton Slaughter was preceded in death by his first wife, Jimmie Holland Slaughter; his father, J.C. Slaughter; his mother, Susan Pierce Slaughter; and a sister, Janet S. Williams.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Smith Slaughter; sister, Carol S. McKenzie of Falmouth, Mass.; his “Bubba”, Joe Slaugher; brother-in-law, Floyd Smith (Martha); daughter, Julie Frey (Lynn); daughter, Jessie Duncan (Gene); daughter, Ruby Greene (Paul); daughter, Mary Lou Gibbs (Grayson); step-son, Chris Drury (Claudia); nine grandchildren; Holly Lott, David Frey (Shandy), Jacob Duncan (Rachel), Jimmy Duncan (Kimberly), Patrick Duncan (Amanda), Jamie Dillard (Harry), Scott Greene, Georgia Dess (David) and Max Gibbs (Sarah); six great-grandchildren, Carson, Ben, Brayden, Mackenzie, Reed and Taylor; and three step-grandchildren, Devin, Gage and Lucia, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Honorary pallbearers are Leroy Moody, Mike Canas, Roger Callaway, CSM Joey Slaughter, Joel McDuffie, Dr. William Linder, Dr. Wade Strickland and Staff, Dr. William Laws and Staff, Dr. Kevin Fussell and Staff and members of the Hardees 341 Breakfast Club.
