Mitchell J. Sweeney, 61, of Brunswick passed away Thursday, April 7, 2022 at Hospice of the Golden Isles after a courageous battle with colon cancer with his family by his side. Mitch faced this battle with an incredible attitude and never lost his sense of humor.
Mitch was born on May 25, 1960 to the late Wilfred “Buster” Sweeney and the late Anne Lee in Brunswick, Georgia. He was a 1978 graduate of Brunswick High School. After graduation he attended Valdosta State University and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and years later obtained an RN degree from what is now known as the College of Coastal Georgia.
Mitch was an avid Georgia Bulldawg and Atlanta Braves fan. He loved playing golf, playing tennis, traveling, working in his immaculate yard, watching sporting events with his boys, and Wednesday night dinners with his friends. He also played the trumpet and was a member of the Elks Lodge 691 for 27 years.
Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 33 years, Jeri Ricks Sweeney; two sons, Taylor (Crystal) Sweeney and Austin Sweeney both of Brunswick; two grandsons who were the apples of his eye, Maddox Mitchell Sweeney and Adler Charles Sweeney both of Brunswick; siblings, Denesha (Brian) Hope of Brunswick and Bruce (Jody) Sweeney of Holly Springs, GA, Father and Mother in Law Ferman and Virginia Ricks of Brunswick, brother-in-law Greg (Susan) Ricks of Savannah, sister in law Dory Ricks of Myrtle Beach, SC. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews, two uncles, and best friend Perry Tucker of Evans, GA
Pallbearers include Perry Tucker, Matthew McDonald, Brian Hope, Kelly Lipthratt, Rex Stalvey, Bill Edgy, Nick Lee, and Ramie Jowers. Honorary pallbearers include Gateway CSB staff, Kathy Glasscock, Stacey Morgan, Julie Edwards, Brett Williams, Dale McNabb, Allison Cox, Lea Partin and members of the Elks Club 691.
Mitch’s family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice of the Golden Isles for the wonderful care given to him. A special thanks to Allison, Brandy, Sandra and Toni.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 12th from 6-8 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, 3321 Glynn Ave The funeral will be on Wednesday, April 13th at Pine Ridge Baptist Church at 11:00 am with burial to follow at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery. Bro. Rob Owens will officiate the service.
